About the Trip

Sailing between Nuuk and Upernavik, two of the most picturesque cities in Greenland, is an experience of a lifetime. Aboard a sailing charter yacht, guests can expect to explore the stunning landscapes of Greenland’s fjords, glaciers, and icebergs, while encountering unique wildlife including whales, seals, and Arctic char. Guests can also experience the traditional Inuit way of life, learn about the history and culture of Greenland, and witness the incredible phenomenon of the 24 hours of daylight during the trip.

Itinerary

Day 01, Embark

Urchins guests will join Urchin at the docks. After a safety briefing and the chance to familiarize yourself with Urchin the vessel will depart.

Day 02-08, Sailing

The sailing from Nuuk to Upernavik is an 800nm sail. The 10 days allocated for this sail is means Urchin must sail 80nm per day to reach Upernavik. This allows for time to explore the coast of Greenland, including the surrounding fjords and icebergs – weather permitting.

Day 09-10, Disembark

Upon entering Greenland, Urchin is required to stop at the closest port of entry in order to process visas. Once processed by immigration, Urchin will dock in order for guests to disembark.

Nuuk is the world’s most Northern capital city. Arriving at Nuuk visitors will be met with the contrasting view of icebergs floating by the city lights, showing an array of building lit in warm colours. The Inuit culture history, and evidence of human settlement, stretches back thousands of years. The city is host to many museums and cultural sites celebrating a proud heritage.

Nuuk translates from Greenlandic to  “point of a peninsula”. Its  Danish name was “Godthaab” which means “Good Hope”.

Upernavik, Greenland

Upernavik, Greenland, is a unique and picturesque town located in the northernmost part of the country. The town is surrounded by over 200 small islands, making it a great destination for exploring by boat or kayak. Another interesting fact about Upernavik is that it’s home to one of Greenland’s largest bird sanctuaries. The sanctuary is located on Apparsuit Island and is home to over 50 different bird species, including the Arctic Tern, Guillemot, and Eider Duck. Upernavik is also an important hub for scientific research in the Arctic. The town is also home to a research station where studies relating to the impact of climate change on the region’s ecosystems and wildlife are underway. This research is crucial for understanding, and mitigating, the effects of climate change on a global scale.

Greenland is inside the arctic circle, offering some truly unique animal experiences, and photographic opportunities. Although the climate is cold and unforgiving, the landscape offers opportunities for hikes and explorations by kayak. Scuba diving can be arranged for those with the experience to brave the waters in dry-suits. Upernavik may be of special interest to birders with over 50 species found on the various surrounding islands.

Packing for a sailing trip means prioritizing clothing that is functional to pack as light as possible as there is not much space on a vessel. Aim to stay warm by layering clothing and bring sun protection. An important consideration is any medicine that you may need may have to be ordered in bulk to last the voyage.
